Pink is traditionally the color for Breast Cancer Awareness and Purple is the color for Domestic Violence Awareness.
So you're probably wondering why this site that focuses on domestic violence is called "Now I Can Wear Pink."
Here is the story...
As a survivor of domestic violence, I know what it's like to have to hide helpful resources. When I was in the abusive relationship, I read books and other resources to learn about the abuse that was happening to me. I remember hiding the covers of these books because I did not want the abuser to know what I was reading.
I also remember what it felt like to be told what not to wear. The abuser hated pink, so anytime I wore pink he would berate me and criticize me. I once wore a pink dress to an easter church service. He insisted that I change before going to his mother’s house for dinner that day. So, to prevent an argument, I changed. This was just one of many times he told me I needed to change or insisted that something was wrong with the clothes I was wearing.
So, the name of this site was directly inspired by my own experiences as a survivor of domestic violence.
Through poetry, blog posts, and other media I will share my story. It is my hope that I will motivate and empower others to break free, survive, and thrive. I hope this website helps to bring healing and freedom in your life.
Love,
Indy
